Default Is a pet a good choice for a tanking warrior?

I'm a fairly new player. My first post-searing character is a Warrior/Ranger. My understanding of the Warrior is that the primary job is tanking. I chose Ranger as my secondary for the pet. I thought having an extra body up front would make it more difficult for enemies to get past me and make a better blocking wall.

Having a pet is a big commitment. You can only have 3 or 4 useful attributes, and beast mastery takes up one of those. You can only have 8 skills, and having an effective pet takes up at least 3 of those slots. So the opportunity cost of having a pet is very large; its at least a third of your attributes and skills.

The other issue is the pet gets in my way. Often after killing an enemy, or selecting a higher priority one, my character can't move to the next target because the pet is in my way. So we both stand there like statues until I step around. Very frustrating in the heat of battle.

However, the pet does add another tank, another possible target, and (I hope) decent damage. And its fun!

I'm not sure if I should keep the pet for my tanking warrior. Do you think its a good idea or not? I'm interested mostly in PVE, but also would like some PVP insight. Thanks for any help.

Eh.. seen them in PvP, iway style mostly. Never seen them in PvE. W/R is a very powerful tank, I don't think you need the pet.

It's extremely useful in pve. With a pet at your side you present a larger body, which is useful for a tank. Problem is, your pet will die about every other battle, so you need to bring comfort, so that's two skills slots down the drain.

Also, Ferocious strike is pretty useful for warriors,

when your pet dies don't all your skills get blocked for a certain amount of time or is that just on the rez? cos for a tank any skill down time is bad

My warrior friend complained all the time about my ranger's pet. Pets get bigger as they level, and a lvl 20 bear is quite large. They may have fixed collision issues regarding pets since I my friend and I last grouped, though.

I would say unless you get an elder widow, or possibly a bera, they are for the most part useless, so I wouldn't reccomend. Possibly if u were a distance fighter because a tank would help draw fire, but otherwise no.

In PvP, for a W/R to have a pet all you really need is Charm Animal. You're not going to heal your pet in the heat of battle. Too much time and loss of skill usage. Also the skill Ferocious strike is the perfect skill for a W/R.

Ferocious Strike 5 Energy 0 Cast Time 8 Cooldown

Pet Attack. Your animal companion attempts a Ferocious Strike that deals +(13...25) damage. If that attack hits, you gain adrenaline and (3...9) energy.

As far as attributes are concerned master in t=tactics, Strength, (weapon), and Beast Mastery once Pet is Lv.20. (To get pet to hearty pet. +60 HP? It is a tanking pet and you don't want it to die) You can also spend some points in Wilderness Survival to get a strong Troll Unguent.

Pets are mostly useless IMO unless you devote your whole skillbar to it. And even then I'm not convinced -- who targets the pet's first :?

And as for "Ferocious Strike" -- on a Warrior in PvP -- are you people kidding ??

OK, you take Ferocious Strike + Charm Animal and I'll stick with Eviscerate and Disrupting Chop.

FS is no joke!!! It is the best energy and adrenaline source in the game. You call a skill with 5 energy cost for 9 energy and some adrenaline PLUS damage every 8 sec a joke? It allows a W/R to use tiger's fury with hammer build. Try this:
14 hammer (with superior hammer rune added)
12 Beastmastery
9 Strength
rest in tactics
(or 7 Strength, 7 tactics if healing signet is used)

Charm Animal
I Will Avenge You
Feroscious Strike (e)-your energy source
Tiger's Fury
Irresistable Blow
Stagger Blow
Heavy Blow (or Counter blow/Crush blow/Mighty blow combo)
Rez signet for pvp or healing signet for pve

The only drawback of this build is it doesn't allow you to take spint or condition remover with you. And be sure use a zealot hammer haft.

The only reason I take a pet to PvE is that my dead pet can create one more corpse for my death necro.

More corpses = more death nova + more putrid explosion + more minions.

Tips: you can also send in your pet to activate your enemies traps. It's extremely useful to dodge barbed traps.

I actually played in an IWAY team for a PvE mission, and it turns out to be really efficient. We have 2 necros and 6 warrior with pets. Try it out and it may suprise you. Esp after the update, AoE nuking is almost a no-no.

unless it's IWAY or another specialized pet build, having an animal in pvp is pretty much useless.

Lots of options for pve though and a good companion. Tanking warrior though is tough as you can't really commit too many att points or skills for your pet.

Oh, and all pets are the same. It's how you make them evolve that is the key. Oh yes, each pet deals a different type of physical damage. But before evolution, that is the only difference and it still is the same base damage.

not entirely true. Pets are also used in death nova suicide build. Although such build is very specialized, it does work to the build's advantage. And having multiple dead pets means multiple opportunities for putrid, and well of profane. More importantly, multiple dead pet triggers soul reaping multiple times. However, I highly doubt pet was intended to be used this way.
Besides, even at 1 beast mastery, pet still do constant 7ish damage to a caster.

Pets are good for a lot more than dying. And Matt, I would advice against spouting garbage, you obviously have no idea what you're talking about. It makes no difference which pet you use, just the evolution.

For all of you that doubt pets can do anything worthwhile, I challenge you to make a pure beast master, 16 in BM, and all pet skills. Saying a pet is useless is like saying that a warrior is useless.
